Praise God in the Mornings

Praise God in the Mornings

Early morning prayers

“The early morning hour should be dedicated to praise: do not the birds set us the example?” Quote from Charles Spurgeon.

How do we wake up in the morning? Do we wake up worn out from tossing and turning after a night filled with worrying? Do we wake up on autopilot and fling ourselves into our morning routine? Do we wake up with a song in our heart and praise on our lips?

Do we ever give any thought to how we wake up?

I haven’t put a lot of thought into how I wake up. I just know I am going to wake up and get to my morning devotions as soon as possible so that I actually get them done and then I get to work pretty quickly. I am usually praying about things by the time my eyes get open.

So, that’s all about what I do . . . but what about the how?

A song in our hearts

Wouldn’t it be nice to wake up with a song in our hearts and praise on our lips — even if the song is immediately followed by a torrential outpouring of requests and intercessions on behalf of others.

Because we are made in God’s image, I often try to draw (imperfect) analogies between how we as human beings feel and how God might feel about the same situation.

Let’s ponder and compare how God might feel about hearing praise first thing in the morning versus being hit with a laundry list of needs and wants with how we might feel if we were apart from a loved one all day, and the moment we see him, he immediately tells us the house smells great because dinner is on or says some other positive comment before he asks if we got the cable fixed or the online order returned. Wouldn’t it be nice to hear something positive first?

God might feel the same way. As always, I am talking to myself as much as I am talking to you. I think I need to improve in this area of my prayer life. Want to join me?
