What a Friend We Have in Jesus

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer.

Oh, what peace we often forfeit
Oh, what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged.
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

~ Joseph M. Scriven “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”

As we celebrate Day 3 of Christmas, I am especially thankful that with the birth of our Savior, Christ Jesus, we have all been given the opportunity to have a Best Friend. Our earthly best friends may let us down, but Jesus never will.

Before we dismiss the idea that Jesus or God can be our Friend, I encourage us to look at John 15:12-17. In verse 14, Jesus tells us we are His friends if we do that which He commands us to do, and in verse 15, He says that He has called us friends.

In Isaiah 41:8, we read about Abraham being called a friend of God. When Abraham believed God, it was counted unto him for righteousness, and he was called the Friend of God. James 2:23.

Whatever our circumstances, I pray that we will know the peace and comfort and joy of having Jesus as our Friend, and if we are alone this Christmas, or if our best friend has somehow let us down, I pray especially that we will know Jesus as our best Friend.

Blessings,
Robyn.
