Is Prayer Your Steering Wheel or Spare Tire?

Is Prayer Your
Steering Wheel or Spare Tire?

How and where does prayer fit into your life?

“Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?” Corrie Ten Boom, author of The Hiding Place and survivor of WWII concentration camps, used this metaphor to ask us what place prayer holds in our lives. Is it a central part of our everyday life, or do we just bring it out when something goes wrong?

Like a steering wheel, does prayer give our lives direction?

Does prayer give direction and guidance to our lives? Do we use or engage in it everyday as we go about our daily business? Is it a driving force in our lives? Does it play a central role?

Or like a spare tire, does prayer sit idle until we need it?

Or is prayer more like a spare tire — something we give little thought to — unless we face a major breakdown or blow-up in our lives? Do we haul prayer out somewhat awkwardly because, like a spare tire, we rarely use it or have contact with it? Nevertheless, do we bring prayer out, thankful to have it in a crisis, because we know how desperately we need it if we are going to navigate successfully through our current calamity?
