Elisabeth (Howard) Elliot was born in Brussels Belgium, the daughter of missionaries. She attended Wheaton College where she met her first husband, Jim Elliot. Elisabeth and Jim both individually moved to Ecuador to serve there as missionaries. While there, they married. Jim was killed by the Auca in eastern Ecuador as he and four of his colleagues tried to connect with the Auca to serve as missionaries to them. Elisabeth would later serve as a missionary for two years to those very people. She authored over twenty books, many of which were bestsellers, including Through the Gates of Splendor.
