Make an Appointment with the Lord

It is possible to practice Morning Devotions

If you don’t yet practice the habit of beginning your day with prayer and Bible reading, you may feel that such an habit is impossible to begin in your busy, over-scheduled life.

It isn’t. It isn’t impossible to start an habit of morning devotions; it just seems that way.

Nelson Mandela said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” Jesus said, “With God all things are possible. Matthew 19:26.

Write down your appointment with Jesus

Corrie ten Boom tells us to make an appointment with the Lord and keep it. What do you usually do when you make an appointment. Do you put it in your calendar? Ok. Create an appointment in your calendar — wherever you usually keep track of your appointments: your journal calendar, your phone, or the front of your refrigerator. Write something that will remind you to pray and read your Bible. My calendar for tomorrow reads, “8-8:30am Morning Devotions with Jesus.”

Just because we can pray anywhere anytime doesn’t mean that’s all we should do

You may object that you are busy, and besides we can pray anywhere anytime. We can pray in the car on the way to work or the grocery store. Yes. We can, and I am not saying we should stop praying that way. Continue those prayers, and add a time to your schedule when you stop everything else, and stop multi-tasking, and just focus on God and reading His word and talking to Him.

Why do we need to set a specific time devoted to prayer?

I believe that conversations with our Creator during our quiet, unhurried, devotional time can be much deeper and more meaningful than prayers we utter as we dash from task to task in our over-scheduled, busy lives.

Just do it

The hard part about all this is getting started and just doing it.

Go. Find your Bible. Bring some paper and a pen to your appointment, and to quote Nike, “Just do it.”

Don’t give up even if it is awkward at first

Don’t give up if your first meeting is awkward. Keep having your devotions with God, and they will improve and be more productive over time.
