As Far as the East is from the West
As far as the East is from the West
So far has He removed our sins from us
As Far as the East is from the West, so far has He removed our sins from us. Psalm 103:12.
Feeling guilty over forgiven sin?
Are you still feeling guilty over sins for which God has long since forgiven you? Why do we do this? Why do we hang on to sins that God has long since jettisoned from our lives?
Infinity separates us from our forgiven sins
Let’s not miss the point of the scripture above. God has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. Notice that God did not say He removed them as far as the north is from the south. He said as far as the east is from the west. Here’s why.
If we start traveling north, and we keep going, we will eventually be traveling south. There is a finite distance between north and south; however, if we start traveling east, we can continue traveling east forever, and we will never be traveling west. Infinity separates the east from the west. So too . . . infinity separates us from our forgiven sins.
Continuing guilt over forgiven sin is a tool of Satan himself
After a recent post, “No Sin is Too Big for God to Forgive,” some readers wrote and told me that they continue to feel guilty about past sins even though they have apologized to God for those sins, and even though they know God has forgiven them.
Satan loves it when we dwell on forgiven sins and continue to feel guilty about them. Those negative thoughts and emotions keep us from moving forward with our full potential to love and serve the Lord–which is what God wants us to do.
So, what do we do about our guilt over forgiven sin?
If God has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west, what do we do about our continuing guilt over forgiven sins? I suppose there may be many things we could do, but let me humbly suggest the following steps.
1. Pray. Ask God to release you from the guilt of your forgiven sins.
2. In the name of Jesus, audibly–out loud–rebuke Satan. Tell him to get out of your life. Tell him he will no longer have power over you. (Luke 4:8).
3. Get busy figuring out what you are going to do for God. Maybe think of a way you can help other people. It seems to me there is no better way to stop thinking about ourselves than to focus on helping others.
4. Pray some more because you can never pray too much.
